Navarra and the Basque Country

In Medieval times, the Kingdom of Navarre comprised of Navarra, the Basque Country and 3 provinces of the southwest France.

As there are no direct flights to Pamplona, if you have a few days extra to spare you can rent a car at the airport and see some of the cities and attractions below – all of which are within easy reach.

All along the Bay of Biscay coast from Biarittz to Bilbao are delightful towns and cities. Below are some of the highlights :

Bilbao, home of the world reknowned Guggenheim.

San Sebastian, 40 min by car from Pamplona, offering a great day out by the beach, excellent pintxos and one of the most beautiful cities in Spain.

Zarauz, great for sufing - amateurs welcome, and good for a night out afterwards.

Saint Jean de Luz, a stunning scenic city on the French Basque-Country coast. See link

Illustrious Visitors - The Statue

Much of the worldwide fame of Sanfermines is due to the references made by Ernest Hemingway in his articles as a reporter and in his novel "The Sun Also Rises", known as "Fiesta" in the Spanish-speaking world. Hemingway - a future Nobel Prize winner - first visited Pamplona on July 6th 1923 and the festival made such an impression on him that he returned on many occasions, the last in 1959.
